The Lowdown On Choosing Ceramic Tiles

- Stone and Tile Tips
Ceramic tiles have enjoyed long popularity and rightly so. Inexpensive, durable and aesthetically pleasing, they can be installed in walls and floors both for exterior and interior use. Even so, it’s important to know the basics of this long-used construction material, what it offers and where it lacks.
- Find out the PEI rating of the different ceramic tiles at local stores. PEI is an acronym for Porcelain Enamel Institute and the rating assigned to tiles is indicative of how hard and durable they are. Floors that will see heavy foot traffic need to last long else you’ll find yourself regularly having to change the surface.
- To give you an idea, a PEI rating of three is fine for guest bedrooms and baths but won’t hold up well in kitchens, foyers and other rooms that will be used frequently.
- Go to a retailer who’s trusted and has been in the business for years. As a layperson, you’ll have difficulty distinguishing between ceramic, porcelain or terracotta and you don’t want to be cheated.
- Don’t choose a tile just because it’s eye-catching. Ask yourself if it will match your home décor.
- Homeowners who can dedicate a lot of time maintaining tiles can opt for high-gloss ones but those who don’t have the time should select one that’s matte and rustic.
