- Stone and Tile Tips
The wonders of travertine were known by the ancient Romans who used it extensively for construction. A notable example is the Coliseum which is built largely out of travertine, proof that this limestone can literally withstand the test of centuries.
Along with being hardy, travertine is very beautiful and comes in different textures and colors. It can match any interior décor and can also be used for outdoor tile work.
Eco factor
Since it’s a natural stone, travertine doesn’t have to undergo a complicated manufacturing process which reduces its footprint on the environment. It’s carved in a quarry and cut down to size. During this process, the grain pattern is maintained as the technique used – called cross cutting – preserves the color and texture of the stone.
Availability
Travertine is widely available so finding tiles isn’t a problem. Moreover, since no two tiles are alike, you don’t need to bother about matching them since the uneven effect is what makes travertine unique.
Ease of manipulation
Travertine is easy to cut and manipulate and construction workers tend to appreciate it for this attribute.
Durability
Like most natural stones, travertine lasts for decades with maintenance. It does stain since it’s porous but it can always be glazed and sealed to protect it from spillage and abrasions.
